There's so much to discover and explore here at Brunel's SS Great Britain. Read on for our top 10 experiences this half term to help you make the most of your day out with us.

  1. Terrifying Turnip Trail
    Follow our trail to experience frolic and fright the Victorian way! Back in the 19th century, turnips were traditionally used as jack o’ lanterns instead of pumpkins. Each turnip on the trail reveals more truths about ‘All hallows eve’ customs. Find out more here.
  2. Discover spooky sights & sounds
    This Halloween, we’ve got a few extra surprises on board for you to discover. Listen out for eerie noises in steerage and keep your eyes peeled for some gruesome additions throughout the ship. 
  3. Ragged Victorians Weekend
    On 29-30 October, see Brunel’s SS Great Britain come to life as it’s inhabited with some poor unfortunate souls from the hard times of the 19th century. Click here to find out more.
  4. Gothic & Grotesque make-up demos
    We’re collaborating with Specialist Make-Up Design degree students SGS Colleges University Centre to offer special effect demonstrations from 22-30 October. Students will be transforming models into Gothic Horror monsters, based on descriptions from Victorian novels.

  5. Go Aloft!
    Do you have the guts to climb the rigging of the SS Great Britain? Go Aloft! will be open throughout half term, find out more here.

  6. Conquering the Impossible
    Join Mr Brunel on a tour of the Great Western Dockyard to hear how the waves were won. Discover the seemingly impossible problems Brunel overcame to build the world’s first modern ship and change global travel for ever. Find out more here.
  7. Private guided tours
    Led by our friendly and knowledgeable Visitor Experience Volunteers, these are perfect for small family groups wanting an informative tour of the ship herself as part of their visit. Click here to find out more.
  8. Archive in 5
    Get closer to history in the Brunel Institute as maritime curators and volunteers take you on a journey of discovery with precious items from the Archive Vault. During half term week, they’re looking at Brunel’s cat doodles!Visitors being shown items in the Brunel Institute at the ss Great Britain.
  9. Young Inventors’ Workshop
    Join us on 25 October to play around with scrap materials and imagine your own invention.  Will you design a ship or a tunnel like Brunel? Can you solve the challenge of getting an elephant across the ocean or design a bridge for a penguin? More info here.
  10. Flash, Bang, Wallop!
    Fashion yourself as Brunel with a stovepipe hat or imagine yourself as a Victorian with a bonnet or fiddler cap. For an extra special souvenir of your visit, try on an overcoat or dress and pose for a portrait at the ship’s launch.
