Home Education Visits

A visit to Brunel’s SS Great Britain can really capture the imagination and ignite learning opportunities.
With a historic Victorian ship, dry dock and two museums there are plenty of places to explore and learn. Home educating families are welcome to visit on any day we’re open to the public, additionally, new for 2025, we’ve launched specific Home Education Days.
On set dates Brunel’s SS Great Britain is open to home educating families only. As well exploring the whole site, families can choose to take part in a range of additional themed activities. More information about our next Home Education Day will be provided soon.

Home Education Prices:
£8.50 per home educated child (4-16 years)
£8.50 per home educator adult (17 years and up)
Free entry for children aged 3 and under
Free entry for 1:1 carers
Please note our Home Education tickets are only available to purchase onsite and are only valid on the day of your visit.
Self Guided Education Resources
We have free education trails and activities which can be used during your visit. They have been designed to enhance your visit and encourage children to explore the site. Please download and print your required resources and bring them with you on your visit.

Our new free app brings a visit to life in new ways as you explore the dockyard, museums and step aboard the SS Great Britain. Listen to museum curators share fascinating stories and insights.

Brunel’s Curiosity Quest
Duration: approximately 30 minutes
Location: Being Brunel Museum
Age range: working at Key Stage 1, 2 or 3
Have fun and learn more about Isambard Kingdom Brunel with Brunel’s Curiosity Quest! Explore Being Brunel while carrying out a range of open-ended tasks, including hunting for objects and drawing a circle in a moving train carriage.
Captain’s Trail
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Ship
Equipment: 1 pencil and optional clipboard
Age Range: Working at Key 1 or 2
Explore the SS Great Britain and complete tasks as the “Captain” of the ship using the Captain Trail.
Each version has an adult guide to accompany it with facts and information about the ship.

Dockyard Museum Hunt

Hunt for objects and discover more about the SS Great Britain. Explore the Dockyard Museum while looking for real objects from the ship’s past.
Dry Dock – Explorers Under the Glass Sea
Duration: approximately 30 minutes
Location: Dry Dock
Age range: working at Key Stage 1, 2 or 3
Use Explorers Under the Glass Sea to discover more about the SS Great Britain and the Dry Dock through a STEM themed activity.
