To celebrate our year of botany we worked with schools and families across Bristol to create a community art piece within one of our Wardian Cases.

To celebrate our exploration of plant migration via steamships like the Great Britain, we worked with families and schools across Bristol and beyond to create a community art piece within one of our newly commissioned Wardian Cases.

Over February half term we ran a paper flower making workshop on board the ship, inspired by the paper floral crafts enjoyed by the Victorians. We asked families to make a paper flower to donate to the ship for use in our artistic installation. Throughout the month of March, we also worked in partnership with Redcatch Community Garden to run the paper flower making activity for local schools that attended workshops at the garden. We collected as many paper flowers as we could to build a colourful cascade flowing from one of our Wardian Cases.

The families and school children did an incredible job of producing beautifully unique and individual flowers, so it made putting together the installation an absolute joy!

On 25th March, we created a wire sculpted cascade which acts as the base for the paper flowers and then the FUN began…a team of volunteers systematically attached the flowers to completely cover the wire mesh, creating a beautifully colourful cascade of paper flowers. You can view the display in the SS Great Britain Visitor Centre until the last week of June.
