Volunteers Week
Thank you to each and every one of our amazing volunteers for keeping us ship-shape! Here are some of their favourite things about volunteering here with us.
We are so lucky to have an incredible team of volunteers here at the SS Great Britain. Thank you to each and every one of you for keeping us ship-shape! For volunteers Week 2025 we want to share some of our amazing volunteers’ stories and to thank them for their continued hard work across departments from visitor experience and education to collections and estates management. Thank you!

Andrew – 1 year volunteering.
“I enjoy meeting such a wide range of people and helping them to understand Brunel. My favourite part of the ship is being able to see its shell, seeing its survival and its return to where it was made.”
Caroline – 3 years volunteering
“I started volunteering after retiring from a people orientated career. My favourite aspect of the ship is meeting the most amazing people from just about every corner of the world. I do the botany talks on the ship, which is something that I really enjoy, and I hope at some point to become a tour guide. I love the people aspect of volunteering; the ship has so much to offer.”

David – 2 years volunteering
“My favourite part of volunteering is meeting visitors of all ages and from all nationalities. As a Quaker, my favourite part of the ship is the steerage section.”

Stephaine – 6 years volunteering
“I enjoy learning the history of the ship and sharing it with members of the public who I enjoy talking to and getting to know. I am also a volunteer tour guide, where I get to inspire the youngest generation with IKB’s projects.”
John – 4 years volunteering
“I volunteer because I love meeting new people. My favourite part of the ship is being able to see its innovative technology that has a human story behind it.”

I enjoy meeting people and telling them the history of the ship’
