5 Reasons to Step Aboard in 2026
As the days grow longer and spring approaches, Brunel’s SS Great Britain is launching 2026 with a packed programme of events and experiences. From hands-on family activities to after-dark exhibitions, here are five reasons to step aboard the SS Great Britain and explore what’s on in early 2026.
1. Discover Your Inner Superhero Engineer
This February half term, families can get to know some real-life superheroes. At the heart of Superhero Engineers are world-changing figures such as computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, NASA pioneer Mary Jackson, mathematical mastermind Ada Lovelace and electrifying inventor Nikola Tesla. Naturally, Bristol’s favourite adopted son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, also takes centre stage.
Along the way, visitors can follow the Hidden Heroes Trail around the ship and uncover the inventions that shaped the modern world. After that, young explorers can head to the First Class Dining Saloon to design their own cape in the Crazy Capes and Marvellous Masks workshop.

2. Climb Higher with Go Aloft
Looking to add adventure to your visit? Go Aloft is our most exhilarating experience at the SS Great Britain. Clipped in and guided by expert instructors, visitors can climb the ship’s rigging just as Victorian sailors once did.
For those feeling brave, the experience does not stop there. Climbers can step out onto the main yard and enjoy a thrilling moment suspended above the ship with sweeping views across Bristol’s historic harbour. Best of all, full access to the ship, museums and dockyard is included, making Go Aloft a unique blend of adventure, history and unforgettable views.

3. Dive Beneath the Waves with Ocean Photographer of the Year
The SS Great Britain’s Dry Dock transforms into a striking gallery as it hosts Ocean Photographer of the Year. This internationally acclaimed exhibition showcases over 100 powerful images from across the globe. Explore everything from vast ocean landscapes to extraordinary microscopic marine life, all displayed beneath the ship’s iconic ‘glass sea.’
During special evenings, you can also experience Ocean Photographer of the Year Lates. Here, the exhibition is brought to life after dark with atmospheric lighting and a pop-up bar.

4. Learning Adventures for All
Our learning experiences are designed for all ages. History lovers can start with the Brunel Institute Talks Series, opening with award-winning historian John Darwin CBE. Drawing on his acclaimed book Unlocking the World, the talk explores how steamships helped shape the modern age through global trade and migration.
If quieter visits are more your thing, our Calm Sensory Sessions provide a more relaxed atmosphere across the ship and museums, with practical adjustments in place to support neurodivergent visitors and anyone who prefers a gentler experience.
In addition, Home Educating families are invited to get creative during our Art and Design Home Education Day. Through sketching and hands-on activities, children can explore Brunel’s artistic side while discovering the ship and museums.
5. Celebrate in First Class Style
Some occasions deserve a truly unforgettable setting. Whether you are planning a wedding, marking a milestone or treating someone special, the SS Great Britain delivers timeless elegance with a maritime twist. Our Wedding Showcase offers inspiration for couples dreaming of a day that is anything but ordinary, while Mother’s Day Weekend Afternoon Tea invites you to indulge in delicate treats served in the ship’s opulent First Class Dining Saloon. For the ultimate treat, our VIP Experience unlocks exclusive access, expert-led tours fit for a First Class passenger.
