British Science Week with the Superhero Engineers
Every March, British Science Week acknowledges the remarkable contributions from the UK to the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), whilst encouraging individuals, schools and families to participate in STEM events and learning resources.
There is no better place to celebrate than aboard SS Great Britain, one of Britain’s greatest engineering achievements in the heart of Bristol. This year, we’re shining a light on Superhero Engineers, past and present innovators who changed the world through curiosity, creativity and determination.
Step Aboard a Real Engineering Icon
Launched in 1843 and designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, SS Great Britain was revolutionary.
She was the first iron-hulled, steam-powered passenger liner driven by a propeller, transforming global travel.
Visitors can:
- Explore the original engine room
- See the pioneering propeller
- Discover how steam power reshaped the world
- Learn how the dry dock now protects the ship
From forces and materials to design and industrial history, this is engineering brought to life.
Meet the Superhero Engineers
During British Science Week, and until March 22nd, visitors can discover engineers and innovators hidden around the site.
Alongside Brunel, get to know inspiring figures including Ada Lovelace, Nikola Tesla, Mary Jackson, Sir Tim Berners-Lee and our very own Conservation Engineer, Nicola Grahamslaw.
Pick up an activity sheet from the Visitor Centre and set off on a Hidden Heroes quest. Track down all six engineers and learn how their ideas shaped the modern world, from computer programming to breaking barriers at NASA.

Get Creative & Dive Deeper
When young people get the chance to make, build and imagine, big ideas suddenly feel within reach. Until March 22nd, step into our Crazy Capes & Marvellous Masks workshop as part of our Superhero Engineers experience. Bring along an old pillowcase (or pick one up onboard for £3), decorate it with fabric pens, and then take to the deck with your handmade superhero cape flying behind you.
If you’re keen to explore further, join Archive in Five and get hands‑on with original artefacts alongside our collections team. These sessions run Wednesdays to Saturdays at 12 PM in the Brunel Institute, offering a rare chance to uncover the stories behind engineering breakthroughs.
We also have a wealth of Learning Resources for anyone inspired by our Superhero Engineers. From creative activities to videos and factsheets, there’s something for families, teachers and curious minds to dig into — whether you’re at home or visiting the ship.

Inspiring the Next Generation
The UK needs more engineers, and British Science Week plays a vital role in inspiring tomorrow’s talent. It helps young people challenge stereotypes, build confidence, develop problem‑solving skills and see the real‑world impact of STEM. By linking Brunel’s bold thinking with today’s innovations, we show that engineering never stands still.
According to Engineering UK: Inspiring the Next Generation, 80% of young people want to take part in more STEM activities after engaging in hands‑on events, and 79% say they better understand what engineers do. Our aim with Superhero Engineers is to help young people connect with engineering role models in a practical and meaningful way. Hopefully along the way we:
