Being Brunel: the national Brunel project

Being Brunel will centre on an exciting new national museum and visitor experience. Visitors will be invited to step into the mind of Isambard Kingdom Brunel as he is brought vividly to life with never-before-seen personal possessions, documents and artefacts.

The project will create a dedicated place where Brunel’s inventive genius may be celebrated, and the personality behind the icon explored. Being Brunel will not only preserve his legacy but also encourage the innovators of the future.

Brunel's ss Great Britain will remain fully open during the build phase in 2016 and 2017. In fact, visitors will see the state-of-the-art museum taking shape and the restoration of Brunel's Drawing Office.

Being Brunel will consist of a major redevelopment of derelict 20th century buildings beside Bristol’s Floating Harbour. The Dockside will become a place for discovery and inspiration.

The new museum will be a place to immerse yourself in the iconic engineer’s life and times, learn about his mistakes and celebrate his successes; compare your own skills to his, and relate his achievements to the modern world.
