Meet a host of Victorian characters as they bring the dockyard to life this May Bank Holiday
The Ragged Victorians will be taking over the dockyard for all three days of the May Bank Holiday; an award winning living history group re-enacting the Victorian lower classes.
With a cast of 15 characters, they will be located on and around the ship, acting out fun scenes throughout the day with a unique take. Expect to bump into a policeman, dock worker, fisherman’s wife, swindler, fish seller, char woman and even a rat catcher accompanied by his live rats!
Joining the crew on Sunday and Monday are Rifle Brigade, who will be creating 'impressions' from the Crimean War of 1853 - 1856.
Armed with their trusty rifles, and a wealth of detailed historic research, they aim to bring the experiences of common soldiers to life. Watch musket firing demonstrations on Sunday at 3pm and Monday at 12pm and 3pm.
The SS Great Britain served as a troop ship during the later years of the war carrying thousands of soldiers to and from battle; therefore it’s only fitting to welcome the Rifle Brigade aboard to explore this lesser known chapter of the ship’s history!
