Job title: Interpretation Assistant - Fixed term contract for 12 months

Reporting to: Interpretation Manager

Hours: 36.25 hours per week (Full time)

Salary: £17,900
 

MAIN PURPOSE

The Interpretation Assistant will be part of the team which leads story-telling about the SS Great Britain for our visitor audiences.
 
The IA will help deliver an outstanding visitor experience by:
 
  • Maintaining existing exhibitions and immersive spaces
  • Helping to deliver programme and live interpretation activities for visitors
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of new interpretation

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out regular checks and work with colleagues to ensure that all interpretation is maintained to a high standard 
  • Plan and carry out regular housekeeping and restocking to keep interpretation resources available and ready for use
  • Maintain accurate and consistent records of expenditure on team budget spreadsheets
  • Support research, planning and delivery of new interpretation
  • Work with the curators to renew object displays
  • Contribute to developing digital content for the museum’s website and social media

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Skills
 
Essential
 
  • Enjoyment of and interest in museums and heritage
  • An academic or vocational qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. history, drama, design) or relevant equivalent experience 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work methodically and plan effectively
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to think both analytically and creatively
  • Basic IT-literacy in Microsoft Office products
Desirable
 
  • Understanding about how to work effectively with volunteers
  • Understanding of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities cultures and communities
  • Practical skills (e.g. dressmaking, DIY)
  • Experience of acting or performing
Experience
 
Applicants should have experience of successfully managing workloads and priorities. They should have experience of working both independently and closely with colleagues.
