Where were you on 19 July 1970?

Perhaps you were a small child looking forward to school holidays—happy to have long, sunshine-filled days ahead of you; maybe you were taking care of school-aged children, anxious to have long summer days ahead of you. Were you in the UK? Travelling abroad? Maybe you were in Bristol and watched the SS Great Britain come back to the dock in which she was built, exactly 127 years to the day after her launch in 1843.

Wherever you might have been 50 years ago, the Trust hopes that this upcoming year, supporters and those involved in any part of the ship’s history, come together to celebrate the anniversary of bringing the SS Great Britain home. In 2020, the Trust will look back on the journey the SS Great Britain took from the Falklands to Bristol in 1970. Although the Trust will be honouring the past, this momentous anniversary is an opportunity to look to the future; the next 50 years.

This year, the Trust is honouring the past by ensuring that Brunel’s legacy is protected and shared in the future. Please donate an amount that is meaningful to you to celebrate this important anniversary for Bristol, Brunel and the SS Great Britain. All donors to this appeal will be invited to a special exhibition preview of original photos of the salvage.

Help the Trust protect the past and engineer the future.
