Go Aloft! Supervisor

Hours: Annualised contract including most weekends. Total hours c. 1570 of which c. 37 per week February to August, c. 21 per week September to January.

Reporting To: Head of Retail and Visitor Services.

Main Purpose:

To lead and motivate Go Aloft! staff members, provided by our partner, Young Bristol, and ensure the safe and enjoyable public use of the Go Aloft! climbing activity.

To ensure the Go Aloft! team is taking every opportunity to promote the activity, and that this team is working seamlessly with Visitor Experience staff and volunteers to ensure an outstanding and high quality visitor experience on the weather deck. 

To ensure the Go Aloft! team is fully embedded within the wider organisation through knowledge sharing, training and development
Salary: Circa £17,000

Main Responsibilities

Main Tasks

  • Prepare instructor rotas providing the correct level of cover and a minimum of one rescue trained instructor at all times.
  • Ensure all daily, monthly and annual checks are completed in accordance with written guidelines, and that all unusable equipment is removed from service. Replace out of service equipment where necessary in liaison with Head of Retail and Visitor Services.
  • Maintain the Go Aloft! course and all related equipment.
  • Maintain all required documentation relating to equipment, checks and working practices.
  • Ensure disclaimers are correctly completed by all participants and filed in line with GDPR.
  • Arrange all appropriate external annual inspections.
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship with Young Bristol.
  • Maintain excellent communication with all members of the Go Aloft! team.
  • Role model exemplary customer service, constantly providing on-the-spot feedback, to create and maintain a fulfilled team.
  • Manage group bookings and group Go Aloft! Sessions on site. 
  • Work closely with marketing, events and travel trade seeking new opportunities and offering new ideas to promote business and expand the Go Aloft! offer.
  • Other duties as can be reasonably required including some early morning or evening work including participation in planning and running after hours events.

Person Specification


  • Climbing instructor qualification: minimum required Mountain Training RCI or SPA, or ERCA instructor and ERCA rescue qualification.
  • Current First Aid certificate.


  • Strong leadership skills, with an ability to motivate staff to achieve high standards and results.
  • Highly practical with an enthusiasm for problem solving.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable working and carrying out maintenance at heights.


  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with young people.
  • Some experience of sailing and Brunel's SS Great Britain is desirable.


  • Knowledge of the safety issues and requirements inherent in managing adventure activities.
  • Basic knowledge of safety systems for high ropes courses.
