Marking the launch anniversary of Brunel's first ship 180 years on, join us to celebrate Helen Doe's new book The First Atlantic Liner: Brunel’s Great Western Steamship.

Hear stories about the Great Western steamship – the fastest and largest ocean liner of her day linking Bristol and New York – which brought Bristol international acclaim as the centre for shipbuilding and heralded some of the most important innovations in travel.

Maritime Historian, Helen Doe, author of a new book – The First Atlantic Liner: Brunel’s Great Western Steamship – will be celebrating the 180th anniversary of the ship’s launch with us by talking about the Great Western and providing a glimpse into the lives of the prominent passengers. Curators in the Brunel Institute will be displaying items relating to the Great Western and Bristol Harbour’s great shipbuilding legacy. Signed copies of the book will also be available to purchase.
