Brunel's SS Great Britain

Find out what life was like on board the SS Great Britain as a crew member, with a volunteer led talk.
Trying to keep over 600 passengers and the crew of the SS Great Britain regularly fed and healthy was quite a task.
Join us on board to learn about the stewards, cooks, butchers, bakers, and even the ship’s surgeon – collectively called; ‘The Idlers’.
Hear their stories and insights into the incidents and accidents that regularly occurred during the long voyages between England and Australia. Why were these Idlers given their unfair name and how did they earn the animosity of the sailors and engineers? You will see a cook, a butcher, and the ship’s surgeon busy about their work when you come on board. Idle? Not a bit of it!
Talks will last approximately 20 minutes.
