Dry dock appeal

Help preserve the ss Great Britain’s historic dry dock and protect the ship with a gift of £25

The ss Great Britain rests in the original Great Western dry dock that the Great Western Steamship Co. constructed to build the great ship. The dry dock, a Grade II listed structure, currently suffers from the effects of water seepage through its walls and floor. It is a constant problem that not only threatens the stability of the historic dry dock but also the safe and dry conditions for the ship.

In order to address this problem, we need to install a new system which will collect and channel the water into existing and new reservoirs at various points around the dock. In addition to protecting the historic dry dock, these works will reduce the strain on the dehumidification plant which is vital to preventing any further decay of the ship’s hull, and should reduce the Trust’s energy costs and consumption.

Please help us meet our goal to raise £30,000 so that we can begin this important project in the autumn and secure the dry dock for the long-term.

A list of donors to the project will be featured in the Autumn/Winter issue of The Great Britain Gazette. Those who contribute £50 or more will be invited to a special event that will take place in the dry dock – a truly unique setting for a celebration!
