Director of Development (Marketing, Communications & Fundraising

Reporting to:  Director/Chief Executive

Responsible for:  Marketing, Communications and Fundraising staff, plus temporary staff and volunteers as and when required.

Purpose of the role 

Raise awareness and funds for the ss Great Britain Trust in order to fulfil its charitable goals, and in particular so the ship may be conserved and placed on public display as a museum and education organisation, now and in the future. 

Main tasks 

  • Contribute to the strategic management of the organisation as part of the senior management team,
  • Represent the interests of the Trust within the organisation and externally as and when required on behalf of the Director.
  • Direct and take responsibility for strategic marketing and external communications which includes managing the brand, media relations, advertising, new media and the website.
  • Working with the Director and Commercial Director, contribute to the development of business and commercial strategies to drive the Trust’s income.
  • Work with and advise the Director on raising the profile and perception of the ss Great Britain Trust to visitors, educators, researchers, funders and decision makers, as a high quality, learning orientated, marketing driven organisation.
  • Develop and deliver a full fundraising strategy to sustain and grow unrestricted voluntary income and to raise funds required for special projects and for major developments.  In particular, direct the campaign to raise £3 million for the Brunel Institute - conservation and learning centre, to be completed by September 2010.  
  • Direct the activities of the department in researching and approaching major donors, trusts and companies to raise the funds required. 
  • Oversee the revenue fundraising activities including unrestricted donations, legacy campaigns and the Membership Scheme.
  • Ensure the provision of high quality services to members and supporters, including the acquisition of high quality data about existing and potential donors, and the tracking of all funding obligations.
  • Lead and direct the work of the Development Team (Communications, PR, Marketing  and Fundraising), ensuring that each team member has an opportunity to develop, through appropriate direction, training, guidance and supervision.  
  • Working with the Director and Director of Finance to manage the delegated budgets.
  • Other duties as can reasonably be required, including occasional weekend work.


Person specification

Knowledge:

  • Educated to degree (essential) or post-graduate (desirable) level, with a marketing qualification or considerable experience in marketing.
  • Strategic planning, fundraising, and financial management.
  • Clear understanding and commitment to the role and value of Brunel’s ss Great Britain as a maritime museum, visitor attraction, and education organisation.

Experience:

  • Must have substantial experience in fundraising and/or marketing.  Candidates without experience in one of these fields need not apply.
  • Substantial line management experience.
  • Experienced in major donor fundraising (individuals, trusts and companies) and in managing multi-million pound fundraising campaigns.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills together with the ability to motivate staff
  • Ability to work and contribute as part of a team
  • Highly developed public speaking skills.
  • Proficient IT user (Access, Excel, Word).
