March 31: Engines & Entropy
7.30pm, Maritime Heritage Centre (next to Brunel’s ss Great Britain)

A talk with demonstrations by Richard Ellam, Newcomen Society & Science Historian, with commentary by Robert Evans Steward, Brunel’s ss Great Britain.

The invention of the steam engine kickstarted the industrial revolution. It also posed a puzzle for scientists, who struggled for a century and a half to discover why these magnificent machines behaved as they did. The science developed to understand steam power turned out to be hugely important and still provides us with some of our most basic and profound ideas about how the entire universe works.

Richard Ellam, a freelance science historian and member of the Newcomen Society for the History of Technology will explain the link between the steam engine and the deep secrets of the Universe in this easy to follow demonstration lecture, which features working models and audience participation.

This event is being run by the British Science Association, Bristol and Bath Branch, in association with the ss Great Britain Trust.

There is no need to book and entry is free.
