WHETHER you are all loved up, or a singleton desperate to avoid romance, the place to be next Valentine’s Day is Brunel’s ss Great Britain.
The ship, now in her original Dry Dock in Bristol, is hosting one of the nation’s more unusual events of the year on February 14 – a Valentine’s Murder Mystery Dinner. |
The Murder Mystery is set during the 1920s in the ship’s Promenade Deck and First Class Dining Saloon. The ss Great Britain is a floating warehouse anchored off Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands – following a successful career as the world’s first great ocean liner, an emigrant ship, and cargo windjammer.
Without giving too much away, the children and grandchildren of the ship’s passengers have been invited to uncover a dark secret.
There is love in the air… revenge… and of course the ubiquitous crime of passion.
Much of the script is based on true events and characters, painstakingly researched by the actors and aided by information gleamed from the Dockyard Museum and on-board audio companions at Brunel’s ss Great Britain.
Whilst the ss Great Britain Trust has no firm record of murder, some believe that the disappearance of the ship’s Captain Gray during a voyage between Australia and England was suspicious.
The Valentine’s Murder Mystery is just one of many special events held at Brunel’s ss Great Britain. It follows two previous Murder Mystery successes, inspired by the ship’s role in the Australian gold rush and world cricketing history.
Deborah Germaine, the ss Great Britain Trust’s Commercial and Visitor Services Director, said: “The Murder Mysteries have been extremely popular, and this is likely to prove a real hit amongst couples and groups of single friends. It will certainly be a different experience from the usual over-crowded restaurant or chocolates, wine, and a movie at home!”
She added: “Special dining events are extremely important for Brunel’s ss Great Britain. Not only do they attract new audiences, they help meet the considerable cost of caring for this magnificent and historically significant ship.”
Guests are asked to enter the spirit of the event, and dress up in 1920’s costume.
The Valentine’s Day theme is carried through in the table dressings, welcome drink of Kir Royale, and the menu which includes heart of smoked salmon cornets, breast of chicken with champagne and forest mushroom sauce, and strawberries dipped in bitter chocolate. Vegetarians can expect a delicious salad of asparagus and artichoke hearts with a lemon and lovage dressing and red pepper risotto hearts with roasted vegetables and pecorino.
Actor Steve Wood said: “Everyone has a wonderful time at the Murder Mysteries on board Brunel’s ss Great Britain. We are particularly looking forward to the Valentine’s Murder Mystery. It’s a cracking script based on some true facts and it just goes to show that love hurts... especially if someone uses a knife!”
Brunel’s ss Great Britain has received numerous national and international awards – including EnjoyEngland’s ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2007’; ‘Europe’s Best Industrial Museum 2007’; and the Gulbenkian Prize 2006 for ‘Museum of the Year’.
