True Stories

A Victorian woman stands at the side of the ship

As part of your visit to Brunel’s ss Great Britain, you will be given the chance to find out about life on board through true stories – diary accounts from passengers who travelled on board the ss Great Britain during her time as a passenger liner.

This section offers some snippets from three diary accounts:

  • Susan Mary Crompton, a newly married first class passenger travelling with her husband from Melbourne to Liverpool in 1866.
  • Allan Gilmour, who travelled with his brother and father in 1852 to join the search of gold in the goldfields of Australia.
  • Edward Towle, a first class passenger travelling in 1852 to Australia, in the hope of finding work.
