CELEBRATIONS for the 40th anniversary this summer of the ss Great Britain’s epic salvage and return to Bristol have a distinct 1970s feel.
The historic ship was raised from the seabed in the Falkland Islands on to a pontoon and towed almost 8,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean – possibly the world’s most daring salvage operation to date.

'SHIP’S HEROES REUNITE FOR 40TH HOMECOMING ANNIVERSARY
‘SALVAGE heroes’ are meeting for a celebratory reunion tea party – onboard ship – for the 40th anniversary of the ss Great Britain’s ‘homecoming’ on July 19.
Most of the small band of dedicated men and women, responsible for saving the national treasure, will meet for the first time in 40 years. For some, it will be the first time they will have seen the ship, now in her original Dry Dock in Bristol, since 1970. Most are now in their 70s and 80s.
