Kids in Cribbs make 'Flatpack Farmyard' for boarding ship

CHILDREN are joining the crew from Brunel’s ss Great Britain to make a ‘Flatpack Farmyard’ at John Lewis in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol.

Youngsters have the chance to cut out and decorate their own pig, chicken or sheep, to take home, between 10am and 4pm on August 12 and 13.

As part of the fun workshop youngsters can also save their parents money by making a pig-shaped ‘kids go free’ voucher for the multi award-winning attraction in Bristol.

The event is being organised to celebrate John Lewis supporting the ss Great Britain Trust by becoming a ‘Brunel Institute Founder’. The donation will boost the Trust’s £6 million fundraising target for the ‘Brunel Institute – conservation and learning centre’, due to open next year (2010). The Trust’s fundraising team has already raised a total of £4.2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, charitable trusts, major donors and corporate sponsors.

This event follows a ‘royal visit’ by Queen Victoria (an actor in character and costume) – with the Brunel’s ss Great Britain ‘Gert Big Stink Challenge’ – to John Lewis during Easter.

‘Flatpack Farmyard’ is inspired by diary accounts from Victorian passengers travelling to Australia. In 1864 a passenger listed the live animals kept on board to feed those travelling First Class. They included one cow, three bullocks, 150 sheep, 30 pigs, 500 chickens, 400 ducks, 100 geese and 50 turkeys.

Managing Director of John Lewis Cribbs Causeway, John Hayes, commented: “Initiatives within the local community are a key part of our business. We are proud to support this Bristol landmark which continues to provide education and inspiration to the city of Bristol and to visitors from around the world.”

The ss Great Britain Trust Fundraising Officer Gary Musson commented: “We are delighted to receive support from the John Lewis Partnership, for the Brunel Institute. The ‘Flatpack Farmyard’ activity is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the store, its staff and customers – old and young alike.”

The Trust needs to raise a further £1.8 million for the world-class Brunel archive and maritime museum, and educational programmes including ‘Future Brunels’ and storytelling for pre-school children.
