The Trust

Brunel Institute Campaign launch event

On 13th May, the Trust launched the fundraising campaign for the Brunel Institute at St James’s Palace with the Patron, HRH The Duke of York KG, in attendance.

The turnout was fantastic, with 180 guests representing charitable trusts, companies and a host of other supporters. Prince Andrew talked with guests, before delivering an impassioned speech in support of the plans for the Brunel Institute, and in particular about the role the Brunel Institute will play in encouraging the scientists and engineers of the future. He concluded by asking for support from guests, pledging that he would certainly be giving his.

The event was sponsored by Linden Homes Western, which has pledged £60,000 towards the two-year campaign, and Managing Director, Nigel Palmer, was delighted with the evening. The supplier of champagne for the ship’s launch in 1843, Mumm G.H. Champagne Cie., kindly donated the champagne for the reception.

Tasked with having to raise £6 million to fit out and run the Brunel Institute for the first five years, the Trust has already secured £3 million, including a grant of £640,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The evening at St James’s Palace was the perfect setting to present the project to potential supporters.

Following the event, the Brunel Institute welcomed its first Founders, with a gift of £10,000 from John and Moyra Horseman. Over the next two years, the Trust will run similar events in Bristol and London, to keep supporters up to date with this exciting and ambitious project and provide the opportunity for others to pledge their support.
