VISITORS to Brunel’s ss Great Britain can upload their own reviews, pictures, and videos to the website from Friday (July 4).

Brunel’s ss Great Britain is the first visitor attraction to adopt Visitor Review, a multi-media review platform  – developed by Bristol-based company Digital Visitor.

Other museums and attractions across England are expected to follow the example over the next few months.

Up until now visitors to Brunel’s ss Great Britain have put their comments in a book, or have emailed them to the Trust. By logging on to www.ssgreatbritain.org visitors will now be able to upload their own reviews, videos and pictures and rate other people’s contributions.

The multi award-winning museum and visitor attraction is no stranger to state-of-the-art technology with the glass ‘sea’, which doubles as the roof of the ship’s giant dehumidification chamber, and cutting-edge video tours for British Sign Language users.

More than 160 years ago, our Victorian forebears were stunned by Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s plans for an iron-hulled, propeller-driven steam ship. Many thought the ss Great Britain, which was the world’s first great ocean liner and the biggest ship afloat, would sink on her maiden voyage to New York in 1845.

Sophina Jagot, Marketing Officer for Brunel’s ss Great Britain, who has been leading the project, said: “This technology provides visitors with the opportunity to upload their reviews, pictures and videos, and rate others’ contributions. It uses a familiar online video layout , and will add a very special element to our website. We will also be able to use this technology to promote campaigns and encourage people to participate in competitions.

“Staff and volunteers are very proud that once again Brunel’s ss Great Britain is adopting cutting-edge technology – more than 160 years after the ship’s launch.”

Director of Digital Visitor Anthony Rawlins commented: “Visitor Review is a groundbreaking technology allowing businesses to make the most of user-generated content on their own website.

“Our company is based in Bristol and we were very keen to launch our new technology in Bristol and we are delighted to be working with such an icon of the city and one of the country’s leading tourist attractions. User-generated content will become a key part of most marketing plans and it’s great that Brunel’s ss Great Britain are the first to embrace this technology.”

Visitors to Brunel’s ss Great Britain will have plenty of opportunity to update their images, as admission allows for free and unlimited return visits for a year*.
